| UPPER BLACKWOOD AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY (INC.) A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SHOW |
 | The first meeting of the Upper Blackwood Agricultural & Pastoral Society was held at the Dinninup Hall (the small brick building, built in 1906) in 1918, convened by Mr. W.D. Moore who was later voted Secretary and Mr. Gibbs President. The first Show was held on November 18th, 1919 and was such a success that it was decided to erect a second hall. This was built and ready for the second Show in 1920. Memorial Gates were unveiled by the Shire President, Mr. J.R. Purse at the 43rd Show on 7/11/1961 in memory of the district pioneers. | | The Society has maintained a high level of excellence and is one of a few Agricultural Societies in the State to remain viable without radical change. It has not always been held on the first Tuesday of November, but this is an ideal time for display of the district’s spring produce and all weekends around that time are taken for other South West shows. The Show has been held continuously since 1919, not even stopping for the Second World War – instead raising funds for the War Effort. | Opening of the small Dinninup Hall 1906.
| The Show Grounds are on Shire land which is managed by the Ag. Society Committee, and have been developed by the Society over the last century. The Constitution (1997) states the Object of the Society is “To promote, encourage and assist the development of agricultural, horticultural, viticultural, and industrial resources." The Society is affiliated with the South West Group of Ag. Societies and the Royal Agricultural Society of W.A. both of which assist with external arrangements such as the District Displays at the Royal Show, the Young Rural Ambassador Award (previously the Miss Showgirl Award) – U.B.A.S. having had an entrant in every year of the competition to 2006. All these help to promote Ag. Societies, the State, the South West and Boyup Brook. | | The local organization is run by volunteers. Members of the Society are permitted to attend and vote at all monthly meetings. A Committee is nominated each year from Members who attend the A.G.M. where the President, Treasurer, Show Clerk, Schedule Co-ordinator, Stewards, etc. are also elected. The Secretary is ‘employed’ by the Society and paid a nominal sum. Monthly meetings are held in the usual format, with agreement by consensus or show of hands. Busy bees are arranged to prepare the Grounds for the next Show and sub-committees are formed as necessary. | The first 4 Trophies - won by Mr. W.Trigwell c.1922
| The Society relies heavily on the community for Show Day support – Stewards, Judges, the Mayanup Horse & Pony Club, Lions Club, caterers, etc. In return the Society offers community organizations the opportunity to fundraise at the Show and promote their organizations. There is a detailed list of those who have held Official positions,LifeMembership, and MissShowgirls/RuralAmbassadors. The Society holds most of the Schedules and many historic photographs and trophies. |
